Grambling Fizzles Under Hue Jackson, Drops Bayou Classic To Southern

The Tigers failed to generate any offensive rhythm, managing only 212 total yards. Quarterback Julian Calvez struggled, completing just 12 of 27 passes for 144 yards with two interceptions. The running game also proved ineffective, averaging just 2.7 yards per carry.

Southern’s offense, led by quarterback Ladarius Skelton, kept the Grambling defense on its heels. Skelton threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Devon Benn rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown. The Jaguars also forced two costly turnovers.

Hue Jackson’s tenure as Grambling head coach has been a disappointment. In his first season, the Tigers have gone 4-8, including a humiliating 69-14 loss to rival Jackson State. Jackson’s conservative play-calling and inability to motivate his team have come under fire.

The Bayou Classic, which annually attracts over 70,000 fans to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, was a major letdown for Grambling supporters. “It was embarrassing,” said longtime season ticket holder Gloria Jones. “We deserve better than this.”

Grambling will have to regroup quickly as they prepare for the 2023 season. Jackson’s future as head coach is uncertain, and the Tigers will need to find ways to improve offensively. Southern, on the other hand, has much to build on under head coach Eric Dooley. The Jaguars will look to contend for the SWAC championship and make another run at the Celebration Bowl.
