Born in Springfield Gardens, Queens, Carnesecca began his coaching career in 1950, leading St. John’s varsity basketball team for 24 seasons from 1965 to 1990. Under his guidance, the Red Storm amassed a remarkable 526 wins, including 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT Championships. Carnesecca was renowned for his innovative offensive strategies, including the high-low post offense and the flex offense.

“Lou Carnesecca was a true basketball genius,” said former St. John’s player Chris Mullin. “He taught me so much about the game, both on and off the court. I will never forget his mentorship and guidance.”

Carnesecca’s accomplishments earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992. He also received the John Wooden Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 and was named to the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2015.

“Lou Carnesecca was more than just a basketball coach,” said St. John’s President Brian Shanley. “He was an institution at our university, a mentor to countless young people, and a true embodiment of the St. John’s spirit.”

Carnesecca’s legacy extends beyond his on-court success. He was instrumental in establishing the Lou Carnesecca Basketball Center at St. John’s, which serves as a state-of-the-art practice and training facility for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. He also played a key role in developing the Big East Conference, which has become one of the most competitive basketball conferences in the country.

“Lou Carnesecca was a visionary leader who had a profound impact on the game of basketball,” said BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman. “His contributions will continue to inspire generations of players, coaches, and fans.”

In recognition of his outstanding career, St. John’s University has announced that it will rename Carnesecca Arena, where the Red Storm play their home games, the Lou Carnesecca Athletic Center.
