The Wild sent a 2024 first-round pick, a 2025 second-round pick, and forward Carson Lambos to the Blue Jackets in exchange for Jiricek. Jiricek, 19, is a dynamic defenseman who has been one of the most exciting prospects in the OHL. He has recorded 31 points in 37 games this season.
Jiricek is considered one of the most talented young defensemen in the NHL. He is a smooth-skating, puck-moving defenseman with excellent offensive instincts. He is also a physical presence with a strong shot.
“Jiricek is a rare talent,” said Wild general manager Bill Guerin. “He has all the tools to be a top defenseman in the NHL. We are excited to add him to our organization.”
The Wild gave up a significant amount to acquire Jiricek. The first-round pick is their highest pick in the upcoming draft. However, Guerin believes that Jiricek is worth the price.
“We believe that Jiricek has the potential to be a franchise player,” said Guerin. “He is a special talent that we are confident will help us compete for championships.”
Jiricek is expected to join the Wild immediately. He will likely play on the team’s top defensive pairing alongside Matt Dumba.
“I am excited to be a part of the Wild organization,” said Jiricek. “I am ready to work hard and help the team win.”
The addition of Jiricek gives the Wild one of the most promising young defenses in the NHL. He will be a key piece for the team as they look to contend for a Stanley Cup.
