The Cyclones upset the seventh-ranked Sooners, who were heavy favorites in the contest. Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Jirehl Brock rushed for 110 yards and a score. The Cyclones’ defense also stepped up, forcing four turnovers and limiting Oklahoma to just 83 rushing yards.
With Iowa State’s win, BYU’s hopes of representing the Big 12 in the championship game were dashed. The Cougars had previously defeated Oklahoma, but their loss to TCU last week put them in a precarious position. Iowa State’s victory eliminated BYU from the top spot in the conference standings, effectively ending their playoff hopes.
“This is a major blow for BYU,” said ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit. “They had a great chance to reach the Big 12 Championship Game, but Iowa State’s win made it impossible.”
BYU head coach Kalani Sitake expressed disappointment but praised Iowa State’s performance. “We’re heartbroken, but Iowa State played a great game,” he said. “We wish them well in the championship game.”
With BYU out of contention, the remaining schedule for the Big 12 has become clearer. Oklahoma will face Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday, December 3. Iowa State, Kansas State, and Texas Tech are still in the running for the title, but Oklahoma remains the favorite.
Iowa State’s victory could also impact the College Football Playoff picture. The Cyclones are now 8-3 and ranked in the top 25. If they can win their remaining two regular season games and upset Oklahoma in the championship game, they could be in contention for a spot in the playoff.
